About

An award-winning private nature reserve called Chumbe Island Coral Park Ltd. (CHICOP) was established in 1991 with the purpose of protecting and managing Chumbe Island, which is located off the coast of Zanzibar. The reserve has a forest reserve that is home to uncommon fauna and a coral reef sanctuary that is completely protected. There is just one way to get to Chumbe Island Coral Park, and that is via CHICOP’s boats.

All-Inclusive Eco-Style Accommodation with Stunning Views of the Sea

All-inclusive lodging is available at Chumbe Island Coral Park in eco-style bungalows with partial open floor plans and ocean views. Overnight guests stay in eco-bungalows with solar water heating, composting toilets, photovoltaic energy, and rainwater collection systems. All guests are served a delicious fusion of Zanzibari, Arabic, Indian, and African food that includes local, fresh seafood, meat, veggies, and fruits.

Guided Tours through a Protected Coral Reef, Forest, and Mangrove Nature Walks

In addition to guided tours through a protected coral reef, forest, and mangrove nature walks, guests receive all-inclusive lodging (alcohol not included). A historical lighthouse and visitors’ center are stops on the journey. The reserve has a forest reserve that is home to uncommon fauna and a coral reef sanctuary that is completely protected.

Sustainable Management and Promotion of Ecosystem Services

Chumbe Island Coral Park strives for the greatest standards in sustainability through the balance of conservation and commerce, whilst supporting community development and cultural stewardship. The main goal of CHICOP is to develop a model of financially and environmentally sound park management, where ecotourism helps fund research, environmental education for local schools, conservation efforts, and other advantages for the local populace. In the UN Secretary General’s report to the General Assembly on the protection of coral reefs for sustainable livelihoods and development, Chumbe’s sustainable management and promotion of crucial ecosystem services for the region is acknowledged on several levels.

Award-Winning Nature Reserve and Global Ecosphere Retreat Certified Long Run Destination

A fully-managed nature reserve and award-winning private island are the main objectives of Chumbe Island Coral Park. In 2019, ITB Berlin’s “Best of Africa” for Sustainable Destinations went to Chumbe Island Coral Park. The Jochen Zeitz Foundation certified Chumbe Island as the first Global Ecosphere Retreat (GER) Long Term Destination in 2011.
