History of the Hotel Kendwa
In 1996, Rocks began as a camping area with palm-leaf cottages, lamps for lighting, a car battery for music, and ice from Nungwi for cold beverages. The hotel gradually grew to include 10 bandas and six little bungalows, all of which were given country names in Southern Africa. The addition of electricity, water, and a generator allowed the hotel to occasionally accommodate up to 60 people. Over a lengthy stretch of beach that is currently largely occupied by major corporation-owned hotels, Kendwa Rocks Beach Hotel is the sole organically grown establishment.
