Born on December 23, 1992, Mbwana Samatta (Mbwana Ally Samatta) is a Tanzania professional soccer player who plays in the Belgian First Division A as a striker for Antwerp, on loan from Fenerbahçe S.K. and the national soccer team of Tanzania.
Mbwana Samatta started his career in 2008 as a youth player for the Tanzanian soccer team African Lyon. He turned pro in 2010 with Simba Sports Club. At Simba Sports Club, he played only half of the season with Simba Sports Club before moving to TP Mazembe, where he spent five years. He was awarded the Africa-based Player of the Year award in 2015, finishing the season on top of the goalscorers’ chart in the CAF Champions League as he helped TP Mazembe win the trophy.
Mbwana Samatta penned a deal with Belgian club KRC Genk in January 2016. He helped Genk qualify for the UEFA Europa League and win the Belgian First Division A title in 2019. He ended the season as the highest goalscorer in the Jupiler League and went on to win the Ebony Shoe award in Belgium in recognition of the outstanding season he had with Genk.

Samatta Mbwana was a key player during TP Mazembe’s run to the 2015 CAF Champions League Final. He scored seven goals and ended the competition as the highest goalscorer. He scored a remarkable hat trick in the group stage fixture against Moghreb Tetouan to book their spot in the semifinals, where they were drawn against Al-Merrikh SC of Sudan. TP Mazembe went on to lift the trophy by defeating U.S.M. Alger of Algeria 4-1 on aggregate, with Mbwana Samatta finding the net in both legs.
At the Glo CAF Awards held at the International Conference Center, Abuja, on January 7, 2016, Mbwana Samatta became the first player from East Africa to be named the CAF African Player of the Year. He got 127 points to beat his TP Mazembe teammate and Congo D.R.C. goalkeeper Robert Kidiaba, who garnered 88 points, and Algeria’s Baghdad Bounedjah, who had 63 points.

On January 20, 2020, Mbwana Samatta penned a 4.5-year contract with English Premier League team Aston Villa. The deal made him the first Tanzanian to sign for a Premier League team and the 117th different nationality to participate in the competition. The transfer fee Genk got was reported as £8.5 million. He made his debut for Villa eight days later in the club’s 2-1 EFL Cup semifinal second-leg victory over Leicester City, which put the club through to the final.
