Background of the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences
Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences’ origin dates back to 1963, after its opening as Dar es Salaam Medical School. In 1968, it evolved into Dar es Salaam University’s faculty of medicine. The faculty of medicine later became Muhimbili Hospital in 1976 and was later renamed Muhimbili Medical Centre (MMC).
The faculty was upgraded into a college of Dar es Salaam, Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences (MUCHS) by an act of parliament, Number. 9, 1991. By 2000, the same act of parliament was to dissolve MMC to create two closely related but independent public institutions: Muhimbili National Hospital and MUCHS. The university has realized significant achievements with more student admission and various new academic courses through the years. The act of parliament that created MUCHS was corrected by 2005. MUHAS was created by the Charter of Incorporation, Article 1, 2007 to comply with TCU recommendations.
