The University of Dodoma (UDOM) is a state university located in Dodoma, Tanzania’s capital. Construction is happening on the 6,000 ha site in the Chimwaga area around 8 km (5.0 mi) east of downtown Dodoma.
The formal establishment of the university was in March 2007 after President, Jakaya Kikwete signed a charter. Initial academic programmes started in September 2007. Today, University of Dodoma is the fastest growing and biggest university in the country, and it’s credited for producing qualified and competent candidates who can compete in job markets.
To be at par with Tanzania’s Development Vision 2025, the university, when operating fully, will have 50,000 students. This more than triples the size of the University of Dar es Salaam. By now it’s 80% finished and is already double the capacity and size of the University of Dar es salaam.
University of Dodoma today has 7 colleges: College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences, College of Earth Science, College of Informatics and Virtual Education, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, College of Education, College of Business Studies and Law and College of Health and Allied Science, of recent there was also the creation of a new academic institute in the College of Humanities and Social Science University of Dodoma called the Institute of Development Studies(IDS) tasked with the responsibility of boosting professionals in the Development studies field.
The University of Dodoma has undergraduate and postgraduate courses from nearly any field of knowledge.
The college of education has various undergraduate programmes with a focus on issues affecting Tanzania’s education sector and abroad. Eleven bachelor’s degrees are available in the college of education.
For excellence in the ICT field, across Tanzania and the East African region at large is the College of Informatics and Virtual Education. The college has programmes for undergraduates and postgraduates in fields including computer engineering, computer science, telecommunication engineering, health and business information systems, information security, and various other courses.
The College of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Dodoma has courses regarding, languages, geography and environmental studies, history, international relation, political science, theatre and film, development studies, art and design and various other courses.
The College of Business Studies and Law has courses aiming at training competent professionals in business studies and law. Various degree programmes are available in this college, including degrees in accounting, finance, business administration, human resource management, international procurement and logistic management, business, economics, information system management, economic and statistics economic and sociology, and law.
The University of Dodoma College of Earth Sciences has programmes including petroleum engineering, mining, mineral processing engineering, geology, hydrology, geo-informatics, and environmental engineering.
The College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences has several degree programmes in sciences and mathematics. This college has three schools including the School of Physical Sciences offering programmes including physics and chemistry, the School of Mathematical Sciences with programmes in mathematics and statistics and the School of Biological Sciences with programmes in aquaculture, biology, and aquatic sciences.
The College of Health and Allied Sciences at the University of Dodoma has programmes including Nursing, Medicine, and pharmacy. Postgraduate students specialize in fields including internal medicine, surgery, obstetric and gynaecology, paediatric and child health, microbiology and immunology, and pathology. The School of Nursing and Public Health, has programmes including nursing education, paediatric nursing, midwifery, and public health and midwifery are available.
