How to Bring Your Pet to Tanzania
- It’s relatively easy to bring cats and dogs into the country, but health and immunisation certifications are needed. Cats and dogs should have received a vaccine against rabies at least one month and not above three years before entering Tanzania.
- To receive an import permit, send a letter of inquiry to Tanzania’s Chief of Veterinary Affairs, Ministry of Livestock and Water Development (see contact information above) or consult with the Tanzania Embassy USA. The candidate should include the following information in this letter: type or breed of pet, size, age, point of entry in the United Republic of Tanzania, and vaccination documents.
The following essential vaccinations are advised:
- LDHP: Leptospirosis, Distemper, Hepatitis, and Parvo.
- Puppies must be vaccinated between the ages of five and seven weeks, with follow-up vaccinations two weeks\six weeks after. The vaccination for rabies should be given in conjunction with the 3rd vaccination.
Worm prevention vaccination
- Worm vaccination should be administered every 3 [three] months, or the animal can be given medication for worms every 45 days.
Note
- If for instance, a US candidate via the Tanzania Embassy USA has a host in the United Republic of Tanzania, it is advantageous if they follow up on the registration and receive the license on their behalf.
- A veterinary surgeon must examine imported pets at the points of entry and, if necessary, quarantine them.
- Apply for export permission if you intend to bring your animal back with you.
- The above permission applications are distinct from entrance visa applications, which should be submitted to the closest High Commission or Consulate. Before entering Tanzania, an application for a work permit and a residence permit should be submitted to the country’s immigration service.

MARRIED ABROAD OR IN TANZANIA
A license of no impediment issued from your native country is expected if you plan to marry in Tanzania.
Documents Required
- You’ve never been married before.
- You are separated and have included your divorce papers or
- You are a widower, and you attached the necessary documentation.
This certificate demonstrates that the appropriate authorities in your home country are aware of no legal barrier to the planned marriage. Birth certificates and confidential information from your nation’s registrar of the total population are also crucial documents to have. A message from your Parish priest or pastor will be useful if you wish to marry in Church.
“MARRIAGE NOTICE” AND APPLICATION PROCESS FOR “SPECIAL MARRIAGES PERMIT”
If you just have less than twenty-one days to file “a proclamation of intent to marry,” you must apply to the Marriage Registrar for a “Special Marriages Permit.” A registration form for a “Special Marriages Permit” will be provided and duly completed, together with a copy of the no impediment certificate. A lawyer or lobbyist must endorse and legalize the form. The signed file must then be returned to the Marriage Registrar, who will review it, charge a fee, and issue the “Special Marriage Permit.”
With this permit, the couple to be must go to the Deputy Commissioner’s head office, Mosque, or Church (based on the location of the wedding and the individual who will perform the ceremony) to schedule the date and time of the wedding. Two special witnesses (non-resident or resident) chosen by the couple must attend the ceremony on the wedding day. After the celebrations, you will each receive a Tanzanian Marriage License, which will be a duplicate of the original.
COMPLYING TO THE LAWS OF YOUR NATION:
If an Overseas Marriage Certificate is required upon your return, the Tanzanian marriage permit must be returned to the Marriage Registrar (Arusha head office) for submission using form Number. RGM 111.
(Application form for enrolment for an overseas marriage). A valid copy of the record in the Registrar of International Marriages is obtained for about TZS 22,000. Before departing Tanzania, an extra TZS 7,000 is needed for the Foreign Marriage License to be issued. Before you present it to your Mission for legalization, the Tanzania Foreign Affairs Minister – Legal Department must approve this Foreign Marriage License.
The legalized certificate can then be filed with your commune, municipal or civil record office. For more information, please kindly contact your Embassy in Tanzania for US citizens contact the Tanzania Embassy USA in Washington D.C.
