Jokate Mwegelo is a politician and District Commissioner of Temeke. Prior to her appointment, she was a media personality and entrepreneur. President John Magfuli appointed Honourable Jokate Mwegelo as the District Commissioner of Kisarawe District in the Pwani Region. She is a member of the ruling CCM and previously served as the Mobilisation and Public Relations Secretary of the party’s youth wing, UVCCM.
Jokate Mwegelo is among the youngest entrepreneurs and influential leaders in Tanzania. Honourable Mwegelo was listed in Forbes 30 Under 30 in Africa in 2017. The Africa Youth Awards named her among the 100 Most Influential Young Africans in August 2017. She was named the third most influential Tanzanian youth in Avance Media’s 2018 Most Influential Young Tanzanians Award. However, she was named the most influential Tanzanian youth in the governance and law category.
Education and Early Life
Jokate Mwegelo was born in Washington D.C. on March 20th 1987. Her parents were working there at the time. She grew up in the Tanzanian city of Dar es Salaam and began her elementary education at Olympio Elementary School, where she eventually became a school prefect.
Jokate Mwegelo enrolled at Saint Anthony Secondary School in January 2000. She got her ordinary secondary education and graduated in 2003 with her Certificate of Secondary Education. She was the school’s Assistant Head Girl for a year between 2002 and 2003. During the Model U.N. (MUN)General Assembly held in Tanzania in 2002, young Mwegelo was appointed as Secretary-General.
Jokate Mwegelo enrolled at Loyola High School for her Advanced Secondary Education in March 2004. She graduated in 2006 with her Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education. She served as the prefect in charge of directing all club activities in the school from 2004 to 2005. From 2005 to 2006, Mwegelo was the school’s head prefect. She came second at the Commonwealth-organised Inter Commonwealth Essay Competition in April 2005. She also ranked second nationally among female students in the English language exam.
Jokate Mwegelo enrolled at the University of Dar es Salaam in 2007 and graduated with a B.A. degree in Political Science and Philosophy with a cumulative GPA of 4.0. In 2008, she founded and coordinated the activities of the University of Dar es Salaam chapter of the United Nations Association. With the help of partners and other students, Jokate Mwegelo organised many initiatives, like the Stand-Up Campaign towards the Millenium Development Goals in 2009 and the 2009 celebration of the International Day of Peace with the United Nations Information Centers (UNIC). The Kigoda cha Mwalimu was also organised at the university in 2010. At the 2009 Tanzania International Student Week, Mwegelo served as president.
Political and Leadership Career
Jokate Mwegelo is a member of Tanzania’s dominant and reigning party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM). She occupied the office of the Mobilisation and Public Relations Secretary of the party’s youth wing in an acting capacity. She, along with 450 party members, contested to represent Tanzania in the EALA.
Jokate Mwegelo’s leadership trait was evident from a young age; she began as a prefect in her primary school and went on to become the Assistant Head Girl at Saint Anthony Secondary School. She was also chosen as the Secretary-General for the 2002 Model United Nations General Assembly in Tanzania. At Loyola High School, She served as the prefect in charge of directing all the activities of social and academic clubs in the school from 2004 to 2005 before being elected as the school’s Head Prefect in 2005. She held the post till she graduated in 2006.
Jokate Mwegelo’s leadership trait shone during her time at the University of Dar es Salaam where she was involved in many activities, including being the vice president in charge of public relations and marketing for Tanzania’s International Students week in 2007 and 2008. She eventually served as president for the 2009 edition. In 2009, she served as the creative project coordinator of the United Nations Association initiative in partnership with the United Nations Development Fund for Women on a 16-day sensitization on violence against girls and women. In 2010, she was made a local ambassador for the Live Global Run water initiative. The following year she was made Ambassador for the Walk for Water Program, with the program going on to benefit more than 90,000 villagers in Bagamoyo.
Jokate Mwegelo was appointed District Commissioner of the District of Kisarawe on 28th July 2018 by President John P. Magufuli. On 3rd August 2018, she was formally sworn in.
Entrepreneurship
Kidoti Company
Jokate Mwegelo formally launched her company, Kidoti Loving Company Limited, in October 2012. The launch was done alongside the unveiling of her new hairline. The company flourished, and she subsequently founded Kidoti in December 2014. She teamed up with a Chinese company (Rainbow Shell Craft), and her company makes school bags, wigs, slippers, and various fashion accessories under the Kidoti brand. Her company has worked with billionaire Mo Dewji in the past. She was honoured by Clouds Media with the Malkia wa Nguvu Prize in business innovation in March 2017. That same year, Mwegelo’s company was nominated for the award of Startup of the Year, while she herself was nominated for the Entrepreneur of the Year award at the Africa Youth Awards.
Jokate Mwegelo has sponsored many community and social activities through Kidoti Co. The 2015 Kidoti Inter-School Bonanza was hosted and organised by Mwegelo. The event was a networking and talent bonanza that featured more than 15 schools from the Dar es Salaam region and involved more than 4000 students. She also organised the Manjano Dream Makers Mentorship Programme in 2015. The following year, she launched the ‘Be Kidotified’ program to improve the learning environment in government schools and provided facilities for netball and basketball at Jangwani Girls Secondary School.

Work
For the 2006/07 season, Jokate Mwegelo was a television host for the show named Bongo Star Search, a singing competition to discuss music talents from across the country. She also hosted other live events and T.V. shows from 2006 to 2007. She became a regular contributor for The Citizen Magazine in 2010. Her contributions cover women and girls-related issues. She began managing the Kidoti Company and Brand in 2012, a post she holds to date.
Volunteering
Jokate Mwegelo volunteers with the Tanzania Youth Cultural Organisation and Tanzania Mitindo House, an organisation that cares for kids with HIV/AIDS.
