Description: The School Construction and Equipment Project for Tanganyika will assist in the construction of two new boarding schools and extensions to 53 other schools in Tanganyika. The project will finance part of the capital cost of an expansion of the secondary school system from 1962 to 1967 with the object of increasing the secondary school enrollment from the present figure of about 15,600 to 22,500, and of increasing the number of pupils who complete the whole four-year secondary course from about 2,000 to about 5,500. It will provide more secondary school graduates to train for the wide range of jobs necessary to the economic and social development this Tanganyika. This project is regarded as an economic development and an engine to drive the country toward economic development.

Description: The Highway Project for Tanganyika will assist in the cost of improving the roads to standards, suitable for growing traffic. The project consists of the design, improvement, construction, and reconstruction of eight roads totaling 734 miles in length. Six of the roads in the project already exist as part of the main road system while the remaining two are existing district roads, which will eventually be incorporated into the main system. It will provide safe and quicker transport of passengers; a stimulus to the development of transport and ancillary industries; and administrative, social, and commercial advantages will result from quicker and assured transport connections. Economic benefits will increase with the growth of traffic thereafter.

There is no alternative method of meeting the load growth more economically until a major hydroelectric installation can be commissioned.

Description: In order to meet the increase in local demand for electricity through 1990, Tanzania is undertaking this Fourth Power Project. The venture will develop renewable energy resources, new job opportunities as well as supplying power to isolated areas. In addition, it will replace production from diesel sets, thus providing substantial foreign exchange savings as well as laying the basis for improved power sector coordination, tariff policy, power system control and load dispatching practices. A further objective of the project is to maintain and further improve Tanesco’s operations through support of its training and management programs. Specifically, the project components include: (a) construction of a water intake; a headrace tunnel as well as a vertical penstock system leading to an underground powerhouse; a tailrace tunnel; a switchyard; and ancillary buildings. The project will also include: (b) construction of a system control center at Dar es Salaam; (c) rehabilitation of the existing Ubongo diesel station and other power system facilities. Funds are also intended for: (d) training and management programmes; and finally for (e) consultancy services.
